​I have released the demo version of my first 3D project, Dark Spasm.Dark Spasm is a Third person shooter inspired by Berzerk, Xybots, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D.​The Demo version only includes 2 episodes (18 regular levels and 2 secret levels) and an exprimental episode 0, which is basically an endless arena mode.​Since this game is a very experimental project, I personally think the overall quality of this game is not good enough to satisfy me. The limitations and optimization issues of Game maker also restricted the level design a lot, so the levels are a lot smaller and simpler than they were suppossed to be. But l don't want to adandon the project and will finish it with full 3 episodes anyway.​Play this Demo version and share your opinions about it, That might be helpful to improve this game.​With this experience, I want to make a more polished 3D shooter next time. An arena shooter like Devil Daggers or a retro first person space shooter like Star raiders. Not only I perfer arena or space combats, It would require a lot less objects per rooms than the Doom-like handcrafted levels in this game. So I got back on my PC, played the training and first two levels, and I have to say this game is damn cool.

The elements you've taken from the titles you've mentioned make for a fun and original whole. I've also been wondering how GameMaker would do with a Wolfenstein 3D style game, and now I see it can do it greatly.

The Berzerk visuals mesh very well with Wolf 3D-ish rendering. I hope there'll be some music in the future because having Wolf 3D's play in my head isn't going to work forever.:PSpeaking of audio, I think it'd be cool to have a voice saying 'Dark Spasm' when the logo is on-screen between levels. Maybe it can become a meme like Superhot's voice clip? Audi a4 navigation upgrade. Don't have it repeat constantly like Superhot does, though. Do only some of the weapons have an alternate fire? Nothing happens when I press the right mouse button with the Screwrifle or the silenced Zapper equipped.​What are the limitations and optimization issues that you've encountered with GameMaker?

I'm still new to the engine, so I don't know it very well. Thank you for playing! Glad you liked it.About the optimization issue, you might have noticed that levels in this game are quite simpler and smaller compared to wolf3D or Doom, and sometimes the textures look very reperitive. It's because I had to make the levels simpler and stretch the block objects to mininalize the number of objects per level to avoid slowdowns. The levels get smaller as you progress the episode and I'm making the levels in episode 3 even smaller to place more enemies.

This is the reason why I'm not satisfied with this project, as level design was the biggest part of doom-style games. I haven't used vertex buffers yet but I believe the technique is basically the same here and this would at least reduce it down to one object per texture. Which should be fast enough, even for the d3d method.You can even reduce it down to a single object if you combine all textures into one sprite/background and then create a single model (or multiple custom model pieces) for the whole level with custom UVs for each wall type that all use that same texture.This is actually what I'm doing right now myself. I create models in Blender with the needed UVs and then export them to the d3d format for use in GameMaker.

However, my textures are too big to all combine into a single one. So I still have more than one object.

But your textures are so small it would be very easy to combine them all into one.I could even create an example project for you if you like.
